A lot of factory jobs don't have that skill level. but... I live in a nice middle to upper middle class neighbourhood.. (Far SE end of Toronto) Parts of it are starting to be gentrified so the trend financially is upward. Half the folks here at least are self employed trades.. They do just fine. It's a good life. Schools still under perform here wrt trades training.. and it seems to be getting worse. The goal is to produce graduates.. not kids ready for life.. There is still a stigma to not going to university. I don't understand it but yes it was definitely already in place when I was in high school in the late 60s. A good tradesman has a lot of value. Self employed tradesman need to be sharp.. Quote wrong.. you don't make money and you ruin your rep. It's that simple.
