A suspect in custody for ambushing a Philadelphia policeman and shooting him three times claims he attacked the law enforcement officer 'in the name of Islam.'

The suspect, 30 year old Edward Archer, told authorities that he went after a police officer because the police defend laws that are contrary to the Koran.

Archer had pledged his allegiance to ISIS, officials say. Ross called the shooting "an attempted assassination of a police officer."

Ross went on to say that Archer "stopped short of implicating anyone else in the attack," adding Archer was "very evasive."

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said the shooting had nothing to do with "being a Muslim or the Islamic faith."

The gun used in the ambush had been stolen from a police officer's home in 2013. Authorities do not know how it ended up with Archer.

Video recorded of the ambush show a man identified as Archer approaching the driver's side window of Officer Jesse Hartnett's car. The suspect points a gun at the car followed by muzzle flashes as the gun discharges.

Authorities said the suspect "just started firing." The suspect fired 13 shots, three of which hit Hartnett. Hartnett was able to get out of his vehicle and return fire striking the suspect.
