Thanks for posting about your experience.

I bought a Chromecast as a gift for my stepfather and was very disappointed in it. I thought it would simply be a cheaper Apple TV-like device and work just like it. I was surprised when I found out it needs a PC or cellphone to work, since it doesn't stream directly from the Internet itself. It didn't work well at all, with constant pauses and dropped signals.

I got him a 3rd generation Apple TV after that for about twice the price ($30 vs. $65), and it has worked wonderfully. No signal problem at all, and his has the added bonus of being able to play music and video content from a Mac if you have one, through iTunes. I bought a 3rd gen. Apple TV for myself too, and it has been really great to be able to play stuff from my Mac as well. As far as I know, Chromecast has no such ability.

My stepdad still uses the Chromecast on trips and such, but I'll never buy another one.
