I thought about that. The solution would be simple. Apple could offer certified components at a profit.

The problem with that is Apple would be undercut by other manufacturers, and few people would buy the more expensive Apple components.

Once upon a time, Apple did allow upgrading even the processors in Macs. I upgraded my Power Mac 7600/132 with a G3 processor from XLR8, one of many companies making them at the time. As far as I know, Apple made no money from those companies, and it extended the time people kept their Macs before upgrading – a losing proposition for Apple.

I don't like Apple's increasingly closed computer hardware either, and it's why so many PC-using propeller heads hate Apple computers. I'd love to be able to easily open up my 2011 iMac to add components, like an SSD to create my own Fusion Drive. I could always change many components of earlier Macs I've owned. Apple has determined it makes no business sense to allow it to be easily done anymore when they'd rather just sell you a new one. Since Apple continues to increase their computer market share while other PC manufacturers are losing theirs, I suppose they think they're doing the right thing.
