I believe it may be due to the copy protection in most digital content. The HDMI protocol checks for rights, etc...
It may be that the DVD player Elroy is using simply avoids the issue by refusing to play common video formats people convert to when copying DVD, Blu-rays and such, even if the files have no such protection.

I remember a friend telling me a few years ago about buying a cheap $25 Chinese-made off brand DVD player at Fry's that would play any video file he threw at it. His Sony player would do no such thing.
