Republican presidential candidates, blaming a federal government they call bloated and inept for losing the “war on poverty” begun a half-century ago, are calling for helping the needy through faith.
IT ISN't a matter of "losing". The WoP was misguided, just like the war on drugs, just like Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, Obamacare, and other huge government programs. They don't work because they create incentives that cause people to get worse, not better.
The programs aren't reasonable from the outset, so over time they become more and more convoluted until they have no chance of succeeding. SS is the worst example, in that it started out making a little sense but even though 40 years ago it was clear it would self destruct, everyone was warned about it, and still no one can work on it, let alone fix it. |
