Bill:

The tax and spend crowd in Washington would like us to think we enjoy low levels of taxation by comparing the US to various socialist economies like France, Sweden, etc. but the total tax bite in the US from Federal, State, and local taxes and fees of all forms imposed by these governments is closer to 40% than 20%. The problem is that most people never stop to think about how much they pay in property, sales, excise, and all other taxes that are well hidden; i.e., the taxpayer doesn't have to write out a check for them. As long as the politicians can keep them 'hidden' by adding them to the price of what you buy, withholding them from your paycheck, including them in your mortgage payment, etc. anything to keep the taxpayer from realizing how much is being taken, the confiscation will continue.
