HI Bill; (I'm off topic but here goes)
I started off with the ole C64 , with all of 64K..
and TWO floppy drives..Went to the Amiga..1000..then finally
put together an 8086 clone, also with TWO floppys..when I got my
first 10 meg hard drive I was UPTOWN..BTW that first C64 cost
me over $1800 with monitor, printer, and an extra floppy..
----------------------
Before and DElls or Gateways were around I got into building
Boxes for locals in my back room..Sold Dow Chem..one of my
first souped-up 286s, they just wanted their guru's to see how
I was souping them up. I thought maybe I'd find a nich and get
off the Boats..but with all the discounters coming on line,
profit margins got to slim.
----------------------------
I saw that computers may not do enough so when the E.D. of
South Texas Girl Soucts, had to get rid of their printing press,
and offered to teach how to run it I jumped on it..( just line
printing but lots of it )..That ran for about two years..then
comes SAM's, with thoes cheap high speed copiers,
and there goes my profit margins .. I'm now looking at 5 printing presses I haven't run in over 3 years, looks like I will have
to hire some one to just haul them to the dump.
I sure enjoyed the printing..and use to fire up 3 at a time
some days..clankity clankity ...couldn't stay on my feet now
that way let alone keep up with feeding and stacking even 2
at a time now..( except for a short while ).
--------------------
Back to computers;
Heck this last one I bought ( close out ) cost $599..assembled,
with the monitor tossed in free..2.5 gig HD ..a cyrix 686 -
200 cpu, 33.6 modem. 16 bit sound card 24 speed CD, and 16meg mem..
I spent $107 buying an extra meg for the vidio card..and
adding 32meg more mem..that put me to the 48meg level..now I see
that with this color photo junk I'm getting into I should have
gone to 64meg, just may do that too..but there is no way
I could have bought all the parts together for that $599,
and I know were all the cheapest places are in SW Houston,
----------------------------------
Heck if every thing else had come down the way computers had
you could Buy a new car for $1000..:-)
---------------------
BTW with the way WIN95 is set up to use HD for virtual memory,
the one singel thing that speeds up your actual out put is
more RAM..faster CPUs..don't mean squat if they are crippeled
by Win95 writing and reading to the HD as then the HD becomes
the big slow down factor. Getting it all in RAM is the trick.
---------------
Had a nice day , just me and the wife. No xmass hassels..no ton
of kids..just me and her..and she happy as a lark in springtime,
I put my old laser printer on her computer..in it's own way for black and white, it beats this new color Deskjet for speed and sharp print,
of the kind I needed to make good plates from.
Hope you Having a nice xmas too..
Jim
