Walmart CEO: I Ignore Global Warming Skeptics

Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillan advised business leaders Wednesday to ignore those espousing skeptical notions about man-made global warming.

“At Wal-Mart, we are very familiar with skepticism,” McMillon told a slew of businessmen at the World Economic Forum. “It’s got to a point where we just ignore it. Doing the right thing is good for business. Where the population is not like-minded it doesn’t matter,”McMillon added. “The decisions behind the scenes improve the products we’re making.”







Wal-Mart was among 114 companies at last year’s climate summit in Paris promising to green-up their stores. The retail store suggested last year that it would cut its carbon emissions to meet the much- ballyhooed 2C ‘safe’ temperature threshold so many at the climate summit.

The store was also one of 81 companies to signal its decision ahead of the 2015 Paris summit to comply with an Obama administration-led plan to reduce carbon emissions.

FRWe recognize that delaying action on climate change will be costly in economic and human terms, while accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy will produce multiple benefits with regard to sustainable economic growth, public health, resilience to natural disasters, and the health of the global environment,” the companies’ pledge read.

Still, environmentalists have criticized Wal-Mart in the past for being too quick to point out carbon-emission cutting successes.

The non-profit environmental group Institute for Local Self-Reliance published a report in 2013 showing that Wal-Mart was more carbon-dependent than most of its competitors.

“Nearly a decade after Scott warned of the dangers of climate change, Wal-Mart’s green-house gas emissions have grown substantially and are continuing to rise,” the report noted.
