Our solution -

Get 2 medium size brother male cats fresh from the litter and have them fixed. Ours weigh about 10 pounds. They are almost 13YO and still hunt everyday. They can still run and leap into trees if a dog comes around.

In winter we create a warm space for them and installed a kitty door. Their space is a store room with concrete floor about 12x14 under the house. They come and go through the kitty door.

We can access their space from a door in the basement. We put down kitty beds (with small electric kitty blankets underneath in winter). We keep a self feeder (dry food only) and water in the room.

When the weather gets cold they often sleep together. If real cold, we cover the cat door with a pad (to keep the place warmer) and put a litter box in their room.

The cats get attention during the day...outside. Including a regular snack treat time with my wife on the covered deck around 1600hrs. She also takes them for a daily perimeter walk around our 5 acres and teaches them tricks by the fire pit. They don't come in the main house.

What we get - almost zero - rodents and snakes and very very few squirrels.
