Dave, start your car, but leave the garage door closed. Sit in the car until you can't breathe. Now, multiply that by a billion. An automobile is nothing more than an efficient air pollution pump. To think that has no effect on our world is ridiculous.
As of 2010 there were more than one billion motor vehicles in use in the world excluding off-road vehicles and heavy construction equipment. Global vehicle ownership per capita in 2010 was 148 vehicles in operation per 1000 people.
