Get a gadget from Amazon that lets you charge your phone in your car. It's saved my bacon more than once and it's always available as long as your car will start.

I already do, and use it often. The external charger I'm referring to helps me when I'm not near my car or charging it that way is inconvenient, such as watching my nephews play a baseball tournament in a park where the parking can be quite a distance away. Also, my car is parked in an unattached garage with a garage door opener, so if the power goes out I can't get into it easily and the car is useless for charging anything.

I prefer the Anker brand for these types of batteries. Their build quality is very high, their prices are not, and they have great reviews across their product lines. Here is the external battery I have:

Anker Astro E3 Ultra Compact 10000mAh Portable Charger

It is 5.4 x 2.6 x 0.65 inches and weighs just over 8 ounces, so slightly heavy, but very solid.

I gave this one to my mother as a present, it is much smaller and lighter:

Anker PowerCore+ mini 3350mAh Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger

It will fully charge a large smartphone at least once with some to spare, and is very small and portable -- it's only 3.7 inches long and less than an inch in diameter, weighing only 3 ounces.
