Thailand: 80-year-old man dies in historic cold snap

The last few days there has been a serious cold snap by Thai standards. In the city of Chiang Mai, the temperature reached about 50F (10C), which for people here is very cold. Everybody and their dogs and cats are bundled up, often even with earmuffs.

This was the first time ever in Thailand that I tried to turn on 'the heater' only to realize that though my air conditioner says it has a heater, it does not!

...
None of the shops and restaurants I have been to have heaters. My friends say that Thailand is nearly a heater-less country, something I only realized in the last 48 hours.

And that is when I discovered just how low wattage the water heaters are. Even cranking up the shower to maximum heat, and turning down the water volume, the water is still in the brrrr range.

This is a far cry from sleeping in snow caves with -20F up in the mountains, but for Thai standards, this was a remarkable cold snap.
