| | | Looks like Spanos will get everything he wanted from the git-go 15 years ago... so now he's finally talking after a year in which he refused to talk to anyone in SD... and he's saying he wanted to stay in SD all along... well, sure... as long as the city gave him a stadium downtown pretty much for free... remember that he's been "renting" the current stadium and hasn't been able to cash in on all of the extras that other stadium owners get... never mind that his rent has been $1/yr.
Oh, and now he sits down with the mayor to negotiate on a new stadium deal, after 15 years of rejecting any proposal that didn't end with him getting an almost free stadium downtown that he would own and could develop surrounding area, too...
But wait, before he sat down with the major, he made a deal "in principal" with Kroenke to move into Inglewood, including details on how they'd split the revenue streams AND he put down payments on property in Santa Ana (Orange Co., about halfway between SD and LA) for their new HQ and practice facilities...
So now as he sits across the table "negotiating" with San Diegans, he can basically say, "give me everything I want by Jan., or we're outta here." He has absolutely no downside in this negotiation... well, unless you factor in being the step-child in LA and having to deal with Kroenke as a landlord and the fact that it will cost him way more to make that move than to pay for a stadium here out of his own pocket... |
