You can only name two southern Dems who shifted to the Republican party in the old days - Helms and Thurmond. Today southern white Republicans elect people like Tim Scott, Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley.

The movement of the Democratic party to the left shifted the south Republican. Dems relied on southern white candidates to counter their conversion into an anti-American leftist party ... Johnson, Carter, Clinton ... but it's not working anymore.
