In reply to your letter B159/EHW/clb of Oct. 29, 1981, the following is submitted in the same tone and spirit.
ACTS OF THE DRILLERS, BOOK I
And in the year of our lord 1981
A disciple named Davis was summoned unto Houston
And, before a great tribunal, he was told to go onto Gabon.
For, speaketh the managers, a calamity hath befallen Amoco.
The drilling rig is following false drilling practices.
It will not make hole.
It will not be repaired.
It sendeth many false reports.
It has blown out and causeth great confusion.
Our people are sorely tried and require succor from this pestilence.
And the disciple departed and entered into the land of Gabon after
a long and weary journey.
And there he spoke with many disciples and one was a mud consultant
named Steen.
And Davis spoke unto Steen saying:
Go forth onto the rig known as the Hudson Bay
And examine there the mud system and all parts thereof
And return to me for I must know:
Why does it take so long to mix mud?
Why can we not expel those evil parts of the mud known as drilled
solids?
What is necessary to return to the paths of the righteousness
As set forth by management in the Drilling Program?
And the disciple Steen entered into the land of the infidel and
after many arduous and trying days wearily returned and spoke thus
unto Davis:
The rig Hudson Bay has only 40 HP pumps for the mud system.
The rig Hudson Bay has fallen into disrepair
and cannot follow the word of management as revealed in the
hydraulics program.
Speaketh Davis: Has the mud system forsaken 60 HP pumps?
Speaketh Steen: The 60 HP pump is dead.
And then the disciple Steen with troubled and heavy heart departed
the land of Gabon and was no more seen again for he entered the land
of the prophet.
And then Davis spoke unto the lord of the Hudson Bay named Watson
saying:
Why hast thou not 60 HP pumps as per contract?
And the Lord Watson replied in great anger:
The 60 HP pump lives, the contract is fulfilled!
And then the disciple Davis resolved to travel unto the Hudson Bay,
And to see with this own eyes what manner of pump lived.
And entering the rig Hudson Bay he descended to the first level.
And at this level known as the living quarters he made himself known.
And leaving the living quarters he descended to the second level.
And at this level known as the deck he was filled with despair.
And leaving the deck he descended to the third level.
And at this level known as the pump room he abandoned all hope.
Davis then spoke unto a loyal disciple:
What manner of pump is before us?
Verily it is 60 HP, sayeth the disciple,
And it is used to pump mud to the desander,
And it is used to pumped mud to the degasser,
And it is used to pump mud between tanks,
And it is used to mix mud since it's brother is usually sick,
And I say unto you it is a wonderful pump and works hard.
And does this pump also pump mud to the desilter speaketh Davis,
Nay spoke the disciple, for that pump is in a secret place
Known only to few men and protected from the curious eyes of the
unanointed.
And then the disciple made known to Davis the location and manner
of desilter pump.
With heavy heart the disciple Davis departed the land of the infidel.
For lo, despite the Lord Watson's proclamations:
The mud could not be mixed quickly.
The evil drilled solids could not be expelled.
The hydraulics program could not be followed.
And then the disciple Davis lifted up his voice to Houston sayeth:
Hear me, O managers of Amoco,
Send me a rig which can process mud.
Send me a rig which can pump proper hydraulics.
Send me a rig which can trip pipe in less than one day.
For I say unto you that such rig provideth not only salvation and
riches but even so it's own earthly reward - namely, a speedily
drilled well.
