Ed,

If you still want to own the stock, you can sell it and then buy it back within 30 days. If you are afraid the stock will make a sharp up move in January (don't hold your breath), you can buy Call options.

I assume you meant after 30 days...........

As I understand it, if you are planning to sell the common for a tax loss, you cannot buy the CALL options during the 30 day waiting period without getting yourself into the mess of the wash sale rule. Net, you cannot take the tax loss because you bought the derivative within the 30 waiting period.
