I have been studying the Malkiel/Mei book, "Global Bargain Hunting: The Investor's Guide o Profits in Emerging Markets." As I mentioned previously, these authors' article in last Sunday's NY Times Money/Business section was quite optimistic about the ability of the countries of Asia to work out of the present problems.

As a matter of practical investing in these countries, does anyone have an opinion of either the Templeton Emerging Market Fund (EMF) or Templeton Eemerging Market Income Fund (TEI). EMF has lost about 40% of its value in the last two months. I wondered if it might be near a bottom. I am also interested in TDF, Templeton Dragon Fund, which is mainly in Chinese investments. All these are closed-end funds; I will check their discounts later today if I can get a Barrons. There is also the mutual fund, Vanguard Eemerging Markets, VEIEX.

I do not presently own any of these and had not even thought about them until the recent calamaties. I guess there is also the Korea Fund and the Taiwan Fund to think about.
