You don't suppose that Intel pushed the FPU into the 486 to crush Weitek and Cyrix do you? <G> After all, about the only app that really needed the FPU back then was CAD...and a few others. Then came this Quake thing and Intel used it to the max to promote their FPU. Intel should get on its knees and thank the makers of quake and other games that utilize the Pentiums dual ported FPU.
