Java is now approaching compiled C++ in terms of performance and certainly that will be matched in terms of repsonsiveness in the not-too-distant future. In networked environments which are operating around the clock you must have much more reliable applications. It's no suprise that PCs are crashing left and right because preventing that requires a maticulous process of weeding out a certain category of programer induced bugs. Correctly written, both C and C++ software would have little performance advantage over a reasonably efficient Java implementation. The performance issue is going to evaporate over time.

Corel's foray into the NC market indicates an unfocused, unrealistic mindset on the part of the CEO and anyone foolish enough to support him in that endevour. It's beyond foolish and bordering on insanity. The traditional PC vendors along with traditional terminal equipment makers will be moving into this spaces as more and better applications are introduced to support it. The CEO should be thrown out by the ear for several reasons but the NC effort takes the cake. Sun, IBM and others have the know-how and the economy of scale to build reliable and affordable hardware for this space.

How foolish is Cowpland? His unparalleled stupidy is evidenced by the fact that their current prototype doesn't run Java. They have an NC prototype that isn't going anywhere even if it's perfect, and it can't run Java. I am telling you right now this man is not fit to run a corporation.
