The country is less red than it was in 2012.

This is a presidential election year. Those have a greater turnout. Plus, the Republicans have more vulnerable seats than the Democrats. All things being equal, the Senate would probably be up for grabs.

Blocking a vote on a Supreme Court nominee has bad optics for independents. Especially if there is grandstanding, which the Republicans can't seem to resist. This allows Democratic candidates to paint Republicans as do-nothing obstructionists and themselves as the ideal candidates to get government working again.

If it was only a couple of months, most of the blowback could likely be avoided. It takes time for issues to take hold.. But the election is nine months away. If the Democrats keep the issue alive, it will likely hurt the Republicans very badly.
