Intel gives the impression 3D Xpoint is on the verge of production and widespread use. This is in line with years of press releases on power efficient processors for cell phones that somehow never caught on because, by the time they were available, more powerful, faster, and lower power consuming products were available from competitors.

But the bigger question raised here is not whether Intel has something that will succeed eventually in enterprise server applications but whether SanDisk and its related technologies can compete over the long haul. I don't have the technical training to determine whose products are better, but it seems to me that demand for solid state memory in enterprise/cloud servers is great enough to accommodate both.
