While I agree that the Bible thumper's are the largest problem. I've always felt the reason we lagged the rest of the Western democracies was because of the control of our politics by the primitive southern culture. Let's face it, any group of people who could not understand how horrible segregation was even in the 1960's are not going to have sophisticated answers to our social problems.
So when Lee Atwater enacted his Southern strategy, and the South took control of the Congress by co-opting the Republican Party, even more than it was already co-opted by them ,and learned how to pull the Dixiecrat's out of the Democratic Party and manipulate the South for their own purposes by telling them we are like you, we love God, guns and hate gays we started a new era of devolution.
Still, it is something we have to be aware of and fight. I don't agree that it is a lost cause for the simple reason in 2008, a black man ran for president to the left of Hillary and won an overwhelming election. As well, the general population actually agrees with most of Sanders positions, they just don't make the connection.
In any event, I think we need to recognize we are functioning under a plutocratic oligarchy and we must address that before we can really make the kind of advances we need to make to catch up with the rest of the Western democracies.
