All the profits are going to the top 1% and half the population is living near the poverty level. We are 65th in the world in income inequality and have the most expensive medical care and education.

We are not catching up as far as our society is concerned, only the plutocrats are gaining. Virtually all the gains of the last 35 years have gone to the top 1%, including the last 7 years.

During 2016, the USA's economy is doing relatively better than the other Western democracies, so that makes the argument for "catching up" with them a good deal more difficult. People will argue that the reason Europe has so many economic problems is partly due to their socialism, and in particular the red tape surrounding employment and layoffs.
