I'm left wondering if this isn't an Apple marketing position, because if the Chinese government told Apple to hand over the contents of a phone owned by a Chinese citizen, or risk their market share in China in not cooperating with the Chinese government, the safe presumption is that Apple and Cook would hand over the contents (or rather, a software update to get at the contents) rather quickly. It seems worth a court fight, but the final outcome is almost certain to be losing. The fight might at least establish some limits and procedures for such a search.
