Lower standard of living? You must have been to different parts of Europe, then. I was in Northern Europe for the most part. Granted, the houses and yards tend to be smaller, but the population density tends to be a lot higher. The houses I saw had a similar assemblage of appliances. The cars tended to be smaller. Beef prices seem to be higher, pork prices lower. Corn is harder to find. Good wines and cheeses are cheap. Having to uses a coin to get a shopping cart is strange.

And Sweden is beautiful. At least in the summer time.

Perhaps you should spend more time out of the tourist hot spots. Paris and London do not represent the totality of Europe.
