About whales in general, one theory is that whales migrate those huge distances to their birthing grounds just to avoid having babies near killer whales. Otherwise, that huge migration to warmer waters makes little sense (they more or less fast the whole time).

As you said, narwhals are one of the few species that don't migrate....instead opting to use the ice fields to avoid the killer whales. Maybe they will adapt or maybe their smaller size will prevent them from taking up a migration as well?
