crs, and All,
This month's (12/97) Business Communications Review bcr.com has a couple of excellent articles that address our favorite topic: VoIP. David Passmore discusses the challenges that await VoIP, along with those of Voice over Frame Relay, with regard to latency and overall quality issues in various venues and modalities.
I read the hard copy of this article, but unfortunately, it does not appear on the web site (where abstracts of all of the other articles appear <scratch scratch>). There is, however, an interesting product focus and review of Cisco's 3600 remote access router product that _is_ viewable at:
bcr.com
In the magazine's review of this product, some of Passmore's comments and observations are echoed again, where it counts.
I have no particular axe to grind in this matter, since I'm searching for a whole slew of answers just like many of you here. But I was impressed with Cisco's RFC adaptations in this product. It is clear that they are focused on optimizing VoIP in their product line at some point, and that they wish to be among the leaders of the pack when (and where, and if) the quality issues and standards are ever resolved. Increasingly, I might add, these are not ALL _givens_ in ALL possible combinations, in my estimation, as supported by some of the hard facts in these articles.
I'd be interested in hearing any comments about this Cisco product development, since they, like Lucent and Siemens, are 800 lb'ers among so many fledglings, relatively speaking, in this field. What are the implications?
