IMHO AMD will survive (if not thrive) until they can get Zen out, due in part to A) the transition from 28nm to 14/16nm(!) and B) an AMD-friendly emerging VR/AR market

An interesting perspective. I am not as familiar with the GPU side so I won't argue it technically but MM did post an article a few days ago showing how well Nvidia did in their last quarter. A case can be made that they did so at AMD's expense. We'll find out more after Q1 but it should be cause for concern. As for AMD getting Zen out, when do you forecast that happening? With AMD's decade long pattern of posting schedules they know they can't possibly meet, do you think this time it's different? Even if you do think it's different this time, do you see a contradiction when AMD says Zen will tapeout over the next few months, it takes 12-14 months from tapeout and revenue and Zen will ship for revenue in 2016? I am not able to work 14 months backwards from Dec'16 and explain a tapeout that hasn't happened yet. Can you perhaps offer an explanation that has so far eluded me?

Zen seems like it should fundamentally improve AMD's competitive position against Intel

Are you basing this on real life data or claims from AMD? Let us not forget AMD said both Barcelona and BullDozer would be the highest performing processors on earth, they they did not live up to AMD's claims. Why do you think AMD can be believed this time?
