From what I understand, the laptop drives don't accept the XHD disks simply because they drives are thinner. It's not that Iomega purposely altered them to foil Nomai.

One of the properties of Iomega's patented retroreflector device is that it can work effectively at a wider range of distances than a simple curved reflector can. Therefore, Iomega's reflector will work in all Zip drives, but Nomai's won't.
