Barrens back on protected list

THE BATTLE FOR Jim Campbells Barren, near Cheticamp, raged all year as
groups fought to have it relisted as one of the province's 31 proposed protected
sites.

Premier Russell MacLellan appointed a three-minister committee to study the
issue and in October he announced that the barren was back on the list.
Responsibility for protected site was given to the Environment Department.

A bill to protect the sites was tabled during the fall sitting of the legislature; it
will be debated when the House re-convenes in February.

The barren, bordering on the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, had
originally been placed on the list in 1995 by then natural resources minister Don
Downe. But in December 1996, the barren was yanked off the list after
members of the Cheticamp Development Commission lobbied the Savage
government to reverse that decision.

Regal Goldfields Inc. of Toronto, had been carrying out gold exploration on the
barren. Some people felt that a gold mine could mean jobs in a high
unemployment area; others feared any gold mining would foul the waters of the
world-famous Margaree River. As well, they said that drinking water in the
whole Margaree Valley could be polluted.
