Barrons short info noted a 6.7 % drop in AAPL short interest from Nov (21.3 mill) to mid Dec (19.8 mill). As AAPL's stock price eased during that interval so it appears the AAPL shorts decreased ? But why ? What do you speculate is happening here ?

AAPL dropped steadily from high teens to about 14 during this period. It's only natural for investors to cover their shorts and take their profits. It'll free up the margin and allow them to buy into various stocks at these bargain prices and participate in the next run up.
