Both shorts and longs are equally risky, as the current downturn indicates. If your short is well chosen you will make money, just as your longs will make money if they are well chosen. In either case, you have to be going with the market. The overall markey may still be trending upwards, but the techs are not. Both bulls and bears make similar arguments: hang on and things will go this way or that. Both will be right at different points in time. Obviously, the bulls seem to have the better argument for within the past 6-7 years the market has risen. However, I can remember before that when the market did not make such moves. Nevertheless, there are a lot of cheap stocks out there and in a short while they will be good buys. If you are buying for the long term, there is no need to participate in these sorts of discussions, as you buy and hold and you will make money, even if it takes 2-5 years. This is probably the sanest way to proceed, not only in this market, but in all markets.
