From the Motly Fool Board - More information regarding Sun's announcement January 18 regarding their low priced Unix workstation. "I read this morning that Sun will announce on Jan. 13th a new line of low-priced Unix workstations that will compete with Windows NT workstations. The systems, developed under the project name Darwin, will be priced at less than $5,000, according to sources familiar with the announcement. Sun is building standard PC drives and peripheral connections into the Darwin systems, rather than its own proprietary designs, which allows it to offer the workstations at prices considerably lower than its current Unix workstations. Analysts said the rapidly growing market for NT technical workstations is being fueled primarily by the appeal of low-cost systems that approach the graphics capabilities of the more expensive Unix systems. The Unix workstation market dropped to $2.24 billion in the third quarter of 1997, from $2.56 billion for the same quarter in 1996, according to Dataquest. The NT workstation market grew to $507 million from $199 million in last year's third quarter..." ===================================================================== If Sun can deliver a low priced Unix Workstation that runs Solaris and perhaps even Windows NT (as an option), would be a good entry level machine for the small business that need an E-Commerce solution. The upgrade path for the Sun Machine is solid as the Intel Merced product is being developed and the Sun Sparc chip is already available. Combine this with the JAVA or CORBA client/server software packages makes these systems quite competitive with those available from IBM, HWP, Dell and Compaq. This investor is very positive on Sunw's prospects for 1998 through 2000. Remember Apple & Novell tried to hire Ed Zanders for their CEO but Zanders has stated that he still has work to finish at SUN. This announcement is but one of many I expect from Zanders in the near future. EKS
