There's a fine line in many established businesses between being too aggressive and potentially harming the goose that's laying the golden egg versus too conservative and losing out on ripe opportunities because they would require additional investment capital.

Grow too fast or at the wrong time and there are obvious consequences. Fail to capitalize on fresh opportunities and watch your competition get stronger. Many a solid company has watched it's competition "eat their lunch" by failing to innovate and stay near the leading edge of the industry.

I keep feeling we're living through a wave of change that is forcing individuals and companies to refocus and re-invent themselves. It must happen at the core management level and these stock by-backs are a reflection of the dinosaur behavior on the part of ignorant management.
