A sugar tax is a bad idea. It is sad that a mere few months after the Prime Minister said he realised that and indicated that we would have no such tax, the Chancellor has caved in to the sustained paternalist nannying that ensued, re-reversing the government’s position, introducing a new sugar levy on the soft drinks industry in the Budget.

This is no small tax, either: the OBR estimates that this levy will raise £520m. Inevitably, prices on soft drinks will go up as a result. So all this really does is hit the poor.

Those advancing this message are too rich to worry about the price of food, but the effect of a sugar tax is to raise the price of groceries for those least able to afford it.
