I love the whole cryoelectronic low noise amp thing. Qualcomm did a test with a company called SCT last fall I think, that makes a cryo-LNA. Their test yielded around a 6dB lower noise figure in the receiver front end. That could double ranges between cell sites (theoretically, that is, your mileage may vary). The question I have to ask is how much does it cost to run/maintain coolant from a compressor up a 200 foot tower? Andy's response as I recall was basically: This is cool. (my pun not his) When its a mature product and we need to increase network quality and lower infrastructure cost we'll use it. -- A translation may be, when its cost effective come on back.

A.J. has anybody come up with a cost effective cryo LNA that is getting installed for PCS? If so, its probably selling like crazy. Reducing the noise figure is certainly one of the more preferred margin getters -- definitely better for PCS than boosting power, increasing antenna gain, or lowering data rate.

I do remember seeing some of these badboys at NASA 10 years ago but they were sitting next to the $300 hammers and talking to spacecraft 22,500 miles away......
