| | | If they don't want to do it, they shouldn't have to. We're already past that point. Apple has said they don't want to do it. The government (FBI) has gone to the government (courts) to compel Apple to do it. If Apple does it (and I'm not saying they will/should/can), I think they should insist on at least the following conditions:
1) The money for doing it comes from the FBI budget (only). The principle here is that the government is NOT empowered to have enterprise do its work for it. Lets see if the FBI really believes there is something worthwhile on the iPhone or if they are just curious. 2) I've had over 30 years experience in software. The 10 men for two week's estimate to do the job that is floating around is (to me), highly suspicious. What's more, I don't believe the FBI has carried out ANY task of this magnitude in two weeks. 3) The solution should be for this iPhone, ONLY. This may involve slicing off the sides of the device to reach the HD or some other solution, rather than new software. The FBI should not expect their iPhone to be returned to them, only the results. If Apple does the job, they should insist that only their personnel be present at the "grand opening". 4) The courts should agree that this case sets no president for later cases, each to be determined on its own merits. Once again, America's companies should not be compelled to do the government's work for it. The government hierarchy is elected, government workers are paid, that aught to be enough. In this country there is separation of Church and State. So too, there should be separation of Enterprise and State. o~~~ O |
