Rarebird,
Many of the illegals coming over here are working for well under the minimum wage, taking jobs away from American teenagers who can use a part time/summer job to help pay for College. Many of the restaurants and hotels who hire these illegals as dishwashers, porters, groundskeepers, etc; need to be penalized.
Between that and the liberal push for a minimum wage hike, you can kiss small businesses goodbye.
Immigrants coming over here are suppose to be assets to the country and not dead weight.
Let's talk about that for a second.

Milton Friedman made a great point about illegal immigration decades ago. If there is someone willing to work for below minimum wage, and there is an employer willing to hire that person, then there is a net benefit. That person gets a job that pays better than anything else he can find, and the employer gets the benefits of that labor at a fair value. (If the compensation wasn't fair, the person would have never accepted the job in the first place.)

The ONLY reason why these immigrants represent a net burden on society is because of all the social welfare programs that are meant to help people at their income level.

Are these immigrants taking jobs away from Americans? That isn't very clear. If an employer couldn't get away with hiring an illegal immigrant for, say, $5/hour, would he say, "OK, then I'll just hire an American citizen for $15/hour"? That's not guaranteed, especially if the employer can't afford it.

Besides, how many citizens here would be willing to work for less than minimum wage? Even during the Great Recession of 2008, I figure half the people out there looking for work would not have accepted such jobs.
