I'm a great believer in the notion that the CEO/ chairman/ president is/ are the projection of the business. If the CEO is willing to lay down uncomfortable facts in a frank way and say "we didn't do as well as we could have," I tend to trust the financial statements more. But when he/ she denigrates people publically, looks like a character out of Lincoln vs Zombies, or just seems too crisp and has a gift-wrapped answer to everything, watch out. Going back to the question on corporate frauds last week, I think Average Joe Investor would do well to read every interview and watch every YouTube video he can find of the CEO if he's not a strong hand at financial statements. He will pick out more frauds than Average Joe Hedge Fund Manager if the last few years are any judge.
