IBM Corp. gained 2.6 percent Monday morning after the
company said sales of its network computers (NCs) are
ramping up. Network computers are scaled-down
personal computers that rely on networks to provide most
software. IBM said it has sold NCs to numerous regional
and national chains including Champion Auto and Best
Western Hotels, as well as the U.S. Navy. According to
IBM, market research firm Gartner Group sees 40
percent of businesses using NCs by 1999 and 60 percent
by 2001. IBM shares rose 1 7/8 to 103 5/8.
