This is a timely article for me. I had a routine checkup last week and my doctor wanted to check my carotid artery. He has an ultrasound machine at his office. I see it as a conflict of interest. A few years ago he almost never asked me to have anything checked with that, but now he wanted to have scans done every year or so. With the last one I got stuck with a few hundred dollars in bills that the insurance company didn't discount. They didn't pay anything. I got pretty hot about it since I consider the scans worthless for healthy people like myself. When asked about the carotid artery I put it off till the fall, but thinking about changing doctors.

This line from the story repeats what I've seen in other stories. "And asymptomatic people in the general population are getting carotid ultrasound screening (often from direct-to-consumer businesses like Lifeline) despite the evidence that it does more harm than good."

As far as results from my blood work there was nothing really out of line. Cholesterol was 194, A1C was 5.3, Glucose was 92, Vitamin D was 51.1, Liver and Thyroid numbers were fine. They checked about 40 other things and they were all ok.

Previous I had blood work done last August. After spending a lot of time outside in the sun and taking a Vitamin D gel tab my number was 63.9. Taking the same gel tab every day but having it checked after the winter the number came in at 51.1. I just found that interesting.
