IBM currently has the most aggressive plan in this area followed by Microsoft, and a bunch of small startups, and hopefully soon Sun will join the trend. Speech recognition/language processing in 98 and going into 2000 will be what GUI development tools and databases were in the late 80's early 90s. The 2 primary ingrediants for the success of speech recognition and language processing are lots of memory and fast microprocessors. Merced therefore will be, in my opinion, a huge success. Even without considering this new shift in R&D and technology trend, the immediate impact of Merced will be enormous. Sun will be impacted by the merced processor in a profound positive manner as it will provide the most optimum performance for Java. Regards, Addi Jamshidi
