3/31/16 Contest update (Since the 1st quarter ended Thursday I’m using that close rather than today’s 4/1/16 close.)
My wife and I much enjoyed our 3-week Japan sojourn. Lots of wondrous stuff to see and eat - not to mention clean subways and heated toilet seats. From reading the financial press, you get the impression Japan is a nation with a stagnant economy full of very old, frugal folks who save their money and consume little. What we saw were streets packed with smiling young people, with quite a few women wearing kimonos. There were many families with babies and the department stores and markets were crowded with energetic shoppers of all ages. Should I believe the WSJ or my lying eyes?
Meanwhile, biotechs were little changed since my update on 3/4/16. At the 3/31 close, the Contest median was down -27.78% YTD (vs. down -26.76% YTD 3/4/16), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -22.98% YTD (vs. down -22.20% YTD 3/4/16) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -26.40% YTD (vs. down -25.98% YTD 3/4/16). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed down -2.75% YTD (vs. down -5.80% YTD 3/4/16).
At the first quarter close we finally had a Contest portfolio in the green, with DNAJOE’s portfolio up 5.64% YTD. But second place GHMM’s portfolio was down -10.26% YTD and third place GENE’s portfolio, was down -13.32% YTD.
At the first quarter close, 57 of the 58 Contest portfolios continued in the red, with 14 now beating the NBI and 26 still beating the SPSIBI. The 224 Contest stock picks had an average YTD loss of -23.65% and a median YTD loss of -25.89%, with 28 of the 224 Contest portfolio stocks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the 3/4/16 to 3/31/16 period, ranked by % Gained and % Lost. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: APPY did a 1-8 reverse split which took effect on 3/31/16.
I will shortly post tables showing the first quarter performance of all Contest portfolio stocks.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Have a safe & fun weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
