Gold is traded on futures markets in which prices for more distant months reflect costs of storage and foregone interest. Consequently, it is similar to a security in which it is as easy and economical to sell short as it is to go long. That means that the price of gold fully reflects all available information, and prices changes only take place as information changes. The price of gold therefore follows the "random walk" that applies to securities prices.

Stating that gold has no intrinsic value ignore the fact that the gold used annually in jewelry, dentistry, and electronics exceeds the annual production . Over the 87 years since 1929, the DJIA increased from 381 to about 17,000, a factor of 44. Gold rose from $20.58 to $1200, a factor of 58.
