Sauna As Good As ExerciseBoost Metabolism, Lose Weight, Lower Cholesterol

A study in the International Journal of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health on the effect of sauna bathing on cholesterol levels in 16 young Finnish men found a statistically significant decrease of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) during three weeks of treatment and in the week afterwards.

Read: Sauna Should Be Routine

After the 10th sauna session, the level of desirable high-density lipoprotein (HDL) remained slightly increased.

A decrease in blood plasma volume was found directly after the first and the last sauna bathing session due to perspiration.

“The positive effect of sauna on lipid profile is similar to the effect that can be obtained through a moderate-intensity physical exercise, ”the scientists said.

In a second study from the same journal, 20 healthy female volunteers (19-21 years old) took a sauna bath seven times every second day.

Body mass, heart rate, blood pressure and cholesterol fractions were measured before and after sauna bath. “Acceleration of the metabolism of lipids occurs after every sauna bath,” the study reported.

A reduced level of total cholesterol and LDL and a raised level of HDLs was observed after repeated sauna baths. “Those kinds of changes may be good prognoses of ischemic heart disease prevention but further research on the influence of sauna on fat metabolism is needed.”
