"What in the world are the secular trends that would make one prefer WDC to SIMO? SIMO's SSD controller business grew about 300% last year, was forecast to grow 50% or more this year, and SIMO recently blew away Q1 revenue numbers so this year's growth for SSD controllers will likely be well above 50%. THAT's a secular trend."

Actually, that is not a secular trend. Secular trends are not measured in quarters.

"What are the secular trends that favor WDC in anything remotely close to that?"

SIMO is a supplier to SSD, and riding the same secular trend as WDC/SNDK - that is the growth in storage needs, and transition from HDD to solid state devices.

By the way, the SIMO board is called SIMO.
