As I am sure you are aware, there are no absolutes here, nor anywhere else, I imagine. Your point is well taken, however, it is mathematically possible to develop formulas that measures overbought and oversold. These are definitional fiats, nevertheless, they are or at least should be correlated with a probability that at a certain level within a certain time frame stocks will become more difficult to buy or sell. There is no difference here between being overbought and/or oversold than stating that stocks at this or that price are on sale - they are cheap relative to what they were within a certain time frame - they are oversold. Does this make sense. I may be off the mark here, but I imagine that this is the substance of those technical indicators that indicate when a stock is overbought or oversold and thus perhaps are ready to move in the other direction.
