I read Belloc's essay a long time ago. He says Rome wasn't invaded by a barbarian horde, the barbarians were already in the gates. They were invited in, mostly to be mercenaries, and given citizenship. So you had people in animal skins walking around what was once an advanced civilization. It was only a matter of time.
