That was an excellent account of Corel's failings ... if looks like
it came out of a project management textbook describing
how _not_ to do a project. It was clear from the start that from
upper levels down there was no clear consensus what was
being implemented.

Applix more cautiously approached the Java-migration and
chose the correct model (client/server) and migration
plan - gradual Java migration.

Java was in it's infancy (prior to JDK 1.1 + JFC) and Corel
should have realized that a pilot project or gradual migration
was the way to go ... not betting the farm on a complete
re-write of their entire office products in a new language.
